so began our adventure
at
SMU Hammers 2005!
haha
an inter varsity and teriary tournament in its third year
and guess who crashed?
TEAM C plus Josh Hiew
haha
ok
lets go day by day

Day One
Sunday, 22nd May
we arrived at ten pm
dressed in our most formal
(court shoes, shirts, dress pants et al)
to fool our way past registration
thing is
they didnt really care
of course
when asked where we came from we would ALWAYS
say in a very loud voice " ACJC, NJC"
and then very softly.."acsib"
haha
so we got there at ten
hung around the food court
saw chua kock yong and family
a perfect example of interracial harmony!
yep
see
thing is
we waited for
FOUR HOURS
before the thing even STARTED
grief
during the four hours
josh had to take
an 'adjudicators test'
which i assume he didnt do very well for! ;)
haha, that kinda helped us in the end
so after much dawdling
and much observing of queer, strange and interesting teams
from around asia strolling in
we began

Round 1
CMA(Composite mobils!) vs NYP(could be nanyang poly but they spoke some strange asian language..maybe indon..)
Motion- THBT the US should assist in the spreading of democracy in Central Asia

debated on the asian format, or on the ncs style. wasnt too difficult a debate
we complexed them to a win..haha tactics! our adjudicator was eleanor uy, chief adjudicator for the tournament. she posseses the amazing ability to codeswitch between american accented english to philipino accented english to tagalog. amazing.

so we broke for lunch
and as impatient as we were
we waltzed down to the food court to get food first
ignored the lunch provided
cos AGAIN
they were too inefficient to give it out
but paul koped some anyway
so we began debating again..

Round 2
CMA vs Ateneo De Manila Univeristy E
(side note- ADMU is one of the TOP debating schools every year. they beat NUS A!)
Motion- THW require minors to obtain parental consent before undergoing abortions

talk about culture shock. the admu teams style of debating was incredibly agressive. their pois their style of debating and the fact that they like to keep u standing for abt 2min before taking your poi! wasnt a bad debate on our part, but we were really awed by their style or manner as they would say. it was amazingly impressive. judged by jason jarvis, an american i think, we actually won! haha, quite incredible, didnt quite believe it to begin with..

yes so we were rather elated
not to mention the expression on someones face after that
was PRICELESS
eh mobils?

Round 3
CMA vs MAHIBOL B(???? but it was made of a random indian man, a huge singh in a blazer and a thai/burmese monk dressed in robes. really.)

grr..this was one TERRIBLE DEBATE. i cant believe we lost it. we REALLY SHOULDNT. the big..gakh..the PRIME MINISTER came up, delivered a horrendous speech that was utterly incomprehensible and gave a policy so terribly vague that it totally confused us! so poor paul had to go up there, and deliver a pre prepared case that didnt really hit..
their silly second speaker
who was shoutign shame and hear hear throughout the previous speeches, stuttered his way to the 7th minute, and in those 7mins effectively muddled things up more. john picked it up a bit, hitting quite a few things
then the monk comes up in 3rd and clarifies johns speech away! saying that we were mistaken! nonsense!
i was so mad. i almost burst. barrack will you?shout down paul will you? shucks la
theres NO way we cld have lost unless mr chacko entered..which i felt he did..but OH WELL
good lesson in anger management!

so we ended day one on a rather low note
returned to the party that was ending
and..went to sleeep
(after some jk II)

day 2
we went there 20min late
and we were like
"crap..hope they havent started without us.."
but of course
we were one of the first to arrive
today we started
two hours late
an improvement i guess
we were really hoping to get a jc team..(AJC, SRJC or HCJC)
which would give us greater chances of actually breaking..alas..

Round 4
CMA vs Ateneo de Manilla University C ( a better team! NOOOO)
motion- thbt 3rd world sex tourism should be a legitimate industry

was a rather good debate. paul and john were really good! but i thought i was a bit off form here..we lost this one..but yeah..was justified enough..judged by sha..sha somethign..ex acjc, nus debater..haha..recognised something she did!

and so ended our run at SMU hammers 2005!
we would have loved to break
made an upset
but oh well
2-2
really no shame there!
seeing how we faced unis!
there really was alot to learn
and it was really cool debating in this style
against such opponents
yepp
it certainly was worth our while
oh yes
special mention to aramis and porthos
who lugged down monopoly and cards to tide us over during the agonising wait of today!
haha

it might have been Revenge of the S**** yesterday
but oh you watch out
give us a year or two
and..
its gonna be..
Return of the COMPOSITE MOBILS!

*other interesting occurrences and facts
-there was a rather queer guy at the comp..we called him the clapper..heh
- there was also a rather cool srjc guy..hmm..didnt get his name
- some of the girls there were quite hot!
- meh meh mr lau came by
- did i say we were the youngest team there? haha
- there was a team called ISUC. you can imagine.
